Looking for something new to watch this weekend? Catch the latest Hindi short film on You Tube. The film, ‘Rubaru’ is actor Tisca Chopra’s directorial debut and she also plays the lead character of the film. Released last month, it is a sincere attempt at storytelling, that perhaps comes from her personal experiences of being an actor.
The story revolves around the protagonist Radha Malhotra and her struggle to stay relevant as an actor. She is past her prime and f not too many roles are coming her way. Her days of professional superiority are over and her personal life is in the doldrums. It is the challenges she faces while preparing for a crucial role in her career that gives this film its edge. The way the actor’s personal life affects her professional life is relatable in so many ways and perhaps you may identify with more than one reel life film actor in the story. There’s also a strong underlying message in the film. It highlights the misogyny of women actors who are no longer young. Shouldn’t there be better roles written for such actors? Or should they continue to be ridiculed for botox treatments and thinning hair.
Chopra, despite being a first-time director, is confident about her subject. A complex story has been narrated in a short time.
