Alzheimer’s Study Cites Language as an Early Sign

IBM officials say their study of language patterns show another possible tool for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Ajay Royyuru, IBM’s vice president of health care and life sciences research, said IBM’s research efforts to track language shows the potential for a non-invasive test that “presents a better window for targeted interventions.” Royyuru said tracking language patterns over time could be done as part of a routine physical or behavioral health exam. Doctors might track and collect a baseline of a patient’s language skills as a young adult and update the test every five years, he said.

The study analysed more than 700 written samples from 270 participants in the decades-old Framingham Heart Study, which has collected detailed medical histories, physical exams and lab tests from thousands of participants.

Special Helpline for Seniors

The New Delhi district administration has started a unique initiative, Hasgulla Helpline, to help senior citizens living in the area. “We are going to operate a hasgulla helpline at the DM’s office to act as a single point of contact. The helpline is being linked to psychologists, legal experts, doctors, etc., to provide any support needed by senior citizens,” a district official said. The New Delhi District has also come up with a Hasgulla Club, which will provide entertainment and re-skilling day-care facilities.

Another unique initiative of the district administration — Swasthyadoot volunteers — will be acting as the community contact for senior citizens. “There are Hasgulla WhatsApp groups and a Hasgulla van will help in reaching them and keep motivated,” the official explained. The primary motive behind Swasthyadoot volunteers is to create foot soldiers to provide healthcare to local residents of their area as the number of doctors and nurses remain limited.
