Lockdown Caused 50 percent Global Reduction in Human-Linked Earth Vibrations

The lack of human activity during lockdown has caused human-linked vibrations in the Earth to drop by an average of 50 per cent between the period March and May 2020.

Researchers believe that this quiet period, which was caused by the total global effect of social distancing measures, was the most pronounced quiet period of seismic noise in recorded history. The new research, led by the Royal Observatory of Belgium and five other institutions around the world including Imperial College London, showed that the dampening of ‘seismic noise’ caused by humans was more pronounced in more densely populated areas.

The relative quietness allowed researchers to listen in to previously concealed earthquake signals, and could help them differentiate between human and natural seismic noise more clearly than ever before. (Source: Sciencedaily.com)

Poor Health Reduces Global GDP by 15 Percent Each Year

New research by the McKinsey Global Institute shows that making prudent investments in the health of the world’s population can dramatically improve people’s quality of life. It can also protect against downside risks such as pandemics, and lead to large economic returns from increased output and productivity. The upside for the economy and society would be enormous — a $12 trillion economic opportunity, hundreds of millions of lives saved, and better health across the global population.

The new report, Prioritizing Health: A Prescription for Prosperity, estimates that poor health reduces global GDP by 15 percent each year — about twice the pandemic’s likely negative impact in 2020 — from premature deaths and lost productive potential among the working-age population.
