Seniors want to work and travel post-retirement

Around 64 per cent of seniors want to continue working post-retirement for financial independence, mental peace and to maintain a healthy lifestyle, according to a survey. Antara, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Max India Ltd, has conducted a survey to bring insights on the lives, aspirations, preferences, opinions and consumer behaviour traits of middle and upper-middle-class senior citizens in urban India. The survey focused on the metros of North, West and South India covering over 2,000 seniors aged 50 and above, Antara said in a statement.

“Seniors in India have traditionally been a dependent segment, after investing their life’s savings on their kids, a stable home, etc. They often rely on the joint family milieu to support them. According to the survey findings, this trend is changing. As per the survey, nearly 27 per cent of seniors expressed a desire to work till the age of 70-75 and 37 per cent of seniors for as long as they live. In addition to financial stability and independence, 57 per cent of seniors want to continue working beyond the retirement age for mental satisfaction. For around 65 per cent of seniors, leisure travel topped as a lifestyle spending preference.

Survey finds seniors hooked to OTT

Trumping notions that OTT platforms are preferred by millennials while the older generation still likes watching TV, a first-of-its-kind survey on senior citizens of India have found Amazon Prime to be the most preferred platforms for entertainment among them. The survey named State of Seniors found that over 65.7 percent of the seniors interviewed said that they use Amazon Prime for entertainment, followed by Netflix. News channels and YouTube came in third and fourth, respectively, as the most-viewed platform by seniors.  Regarding the the growing senior population in India, which is expected to rise to 20 percent of the population by 2050, the survey attempts to understand seniors better, with a special focus on their aspirations, preferences and opinions in today’s socio-cultural and political context.

Conducted by Antara and Access Media International, the survey paints a detailed picture of what senior citizens in urban spaces and affluent economic backgrounds think and feel about pop culture, current social and entertainment trends, and what they do to entertain themselves. The findings may help content makers and policy creators to better help understand the needs of senior citizens, who are often overlooked by society. The sample size of the survey consisted of over 2,000 senior citizens spread across several cities in India including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and others. The coronavirus lockdown last year made senior citizens of the country privy to online services including video calling and social media. According to an Ericsson Consumer Labs report in July 2017, 89 percent of senior citizens relied on video calling to make it through a crisis, medical emergencies or staying connected with family.
