Climate Change and Health

Global warming may ultimately affect everyone’s health, but new research suggests that major thunderstorms are already wreaking some havoc on the respiratory health of seniors. It’s also because atmospheric changes that precede storms increase the risk that older people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) could develop breathing problems serious enough to send them to hospital. The conclusion follows a 14-year-long investigation — described as the largest of its kind — that tracked stormy weather and emergency room visits among more than 46 million people.  (Source: Webmd)

Euthanasia Referendum

As the general election draws closer, Marlborough’s (New Zealand) senior citizens have weighed in on the polarising End of Life Choice Act.  The bill on assisted dying for the terminally ill would be one of two referendums put to the public at the general election, scheduled for October 17. Under the terms of the End of Life Choice Act, many degenerative conditions would be ruled out by the eligibility criteria. Last November, Parliament passed the End of Life Choice Act by 69-51 votes, sending it to a referendum and putting the decision in the hands of the public.  To be eligible for assisted dying under the Act, a person must be suffering from a terminal illness that is likely to end their life within six months. They must have a significant and ongoing decline in physical capability and experience unbearable suffering that cannot be eased. But more than 1000 protesters marched through central Christchurch last week in opposition to the upcoming End of Life Choice Act referendum. (Source: stuff.co.nz)
