Herbalist and Pharmaceutical Scientist U.K. Tiwari, as well as, Product Development Manager of Organic India, talks about what constitutes organic food.
What is the vision of Organic India?
Our vision is to be a ‘Vehicle of Consciousness’ in the global market. We want to create a holistic, sustainable business modality, which inspires, promotes and supports true wellness and respect for all beings and Mother Nature.
How does consuming or using organic products benefit consumers?
Organic products benefit consumers in two ways. One, they are free of harmful chemicals. Chemical pesticides, chemical fertilizers, chemical insecticides or chemical herbicides, chemical preservatives, etc. do not get into products which are organic. These are also free from the possible negative impact of genetically modified seeds. Secondly, organic products have been found to be richer in active constituents of medicinal herbs and richer in nutrients, such as antioxidants and vitamins content of food products.
How does a product get branded organic?
From the selection of land to the selection of seeds to transporting the finished products, organic producers have to follow guidelines of APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority). This is duly monitored by certifying agencies with prescribed transparencies in the system. The Approved Agency issues certificates when they are satisfied with all criteria being met, coupled with supporting proof and substantiation.
How can one identify organic products?
One can identify organic products by seeing organic claims and monograms of certifying agencies on the product label. A conscious customer can contact the certifying agency and can confirm it for himself/herself.
