Forgetfulness vs Memory Loss
One of the reasons for increasing forgetfulness is that as you grow older, you experience physiological changes. These glitches occur due to the changes in the way your brain functions. As you age, your reflexes slow down. You aren’t as quick in your physical fitness. Similarly, as you age, the brain too slows down. It is normal age-related forgetfulness and the symptoms may not indicate any cognitive condition. Sometimes forgetfulness arise out of lack of proper sleep, change in medications, stress, anxiety and depression.
Not all memory losses are indicators of Dementia or Alzheimer’s. Serious memory problems may hinder your daily functioning like driving your car or sending out emails. If you ask the same question repeatedly, it could be a sign of a cognitive condition. Not being able to follow instructions is another indicator of a serious issue. Staying confused and not being alert are other signs that require visit to a physician.
But common age-related memory issues are nothing to worry about. They can be handled with proper diet, rest and exercises.

There are three causes of age-related memory loss as per helpguide.org. They are as follows:
1. As you age, the hippocampus, which is a region of the brain involved in the formation and retrieval of memories, deteriorates.
2. Ageing also leads to decline in hormones and proteins that protect and repair brain cells. They also stimulate neural growth and it declines with age.
3. Seniors often experience decreased blood flow to the brain, which can impair memory and lead to changes in cognitive skills.
Keep your brain agile
One of the key ways to improve your brain health is by keeping your brain stimulated at all times. Just as your body deteriorates if you don’t indulge in a physical activity, the brain too shrinks with non-activity. As you age, the number of things that kept you busy reduces. You have too much free time in hand. So use it judiciously.
Solving a crossword puzzle or playing Sudoku or Scrabble keeps your brain sharp. Keep stress at bay. Avoid smoking. If you are alone, do not wallow in self-pity. Instead, socialise more often. Create a virtual life. Familairise yourselves with tech. Take help of a grandchild and learn how to do interactive online activities. Pay attention to eating a nutritious diet. Physical exercise is important. Practice meditation and yoga. Keep yourself engaged in some creative activity.
