History of Indian Food – Jayanti Rajagopalan
November 16, 2021 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm IST
Religion has always defined how and who people pray to. But religion has also defined traditions of how and what people eat in their everyday lives and during various special occasions. Today’s talk will explore some aspects of the different religions in India to see how they have shaped the eating habits of the people. We will also take the cuisine of Kolkata as an example of a city whose cuisine has been defined not only by the ancient Hindu traditions and its evolution with the arrival of the colonists.
About the Facilitator
Jayanti Rajagopalan also known as Jonty was born into a South Indian family but grew up in Jamshedpur, an industrial town in the Eastern part of India known for its cosmopolitan culture. She completed her MBA from XLRI Jamshedpur and joined Titan Industries in 1995. For the next almost 14 years, her work in Sales & Marketing with Titan and a brief 3-year stint with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation took her to various parts of India. In 2008, she decided to start Detours, a company focussed on showcasing the country through its culture, traditions and food rather than just through its historical monuments. Apart from the various tours in Hyderabad, once a year, she leads a 12-day culinary tour across 3-4 cities across the country where she aims to showcase the country through its food.
